Direct Routing allows a user to connect a supported SBC (Session Border Control), via the Microsoft Phone System, to just about any SIP Trunk or on-premise PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Incoming and outgoing calls are passed through the Microsoft Teams client before being delivered to the end user.

How Does Direct Routing Work?

Direct Routing works by connecting Microsoft Teams to the PSTN by using a  session border controller(SBC) and SIP trunks.

 

Session Border Controller (SBC)

A session border controller (SBC) is a network element deployed to protect SIP based VoIP  networks. Early deployments of SBCs were focused on the borders between two service provider networks in a peering environment. This role has now expanded to include significant deployments between a service provider’s access network and a backbone network to provide service to residential and/or enterprise customers.

The term “session” refers to a communication between two parties – in the context of telephony, this would be a call. Each call consists of one or more call signaling message exchanges that control the call, and one or more call media streams which carry the call’s audio, video, or other data along with information of call statistics and quality. Together, these streams make up a session. It is the job of a session border controller to exert influence over the data flows of sessions. A session border controller is usually a firewall. It is used as a border between different networks to make sure data is transferred correctly. It also provides a layer of security and protection from attacks.

We host a Microsoft-Certified SBC which is connected to our SIP Trunks allowing users to make and receive calls using Microsoft Teams. Our SIP trunks are manufactured, approved by all telephone applications sold in the UK, the difference with Direct Routing is, no carrier is approved by Microsoft, it’s the SBC which needs to be approved by Microsoft.

 

SIP Trunks

SIP trunking enables the end point’s PBX (Private Branch Exchange phone system) to send and receive calls via an IP network, such as the internet or private WAN. As SIP is applied for the signalling protocol for multiple real-time applications, SIP trunk is able to control voice, video and messaging applications. It is also a VoIP technology and streaming media service based on the SIP by which ITSPs deliver telephone services and unified communications to customers equipped with SIP-based IP PBX and unified communications facilities. Most unified communications applications provide voice, video, and other streaming media applications such as desktop sharing, web conferencing, and shared whiteboard. A SIP Trunk connects your telephony application to the PSTN network. It is a facility provided by us since a long time that allows the routing of telephone calls on an internet connection rather than using an ISDN line, which provides more flexibility, is more efficient and more cost-effective.
