Switching to iPhone 17: The Complete Setup Guide for Business Users
Switching to iPhone 17: The Complete Setup Guide for Business Users
Last updated: April 2026
Switching to a new iPhone feels like it should be complicated. It is not. Apple has spent years making the process nearly effortless, and with the iPhone 17 it is smoother than ever. The truth is that most people overthink this. If you have 30 minutes and a decent WiFi connection, you can have your new iPhone 17 set up with everything from your old phone transferred across, business apps ready, and your SIM working.
This guide walks you through the entire process from start to finish. Whether you are upgrading from an older iPhone, switching from Android, or setting up a brand new business phone from scratch, we cover every step so there is zero downtime and nothing gets lost.
We are Compare The Networks, an OFCOM-regulated business mobile comparison service established in 2008. We have helped thousands of UK businesses get the best iPhone deals and we know the setup process inside out. Step 1: Back Up Your Old Phone Before Anything Else
Before you touch your new iPhone 17, make sure your old phone is backed up. This is the single most important step. Everything else can be fixed or redone, but if you lose data because you skipped the backup, that is genuinely painful.
iCloud Backup (Recommended)
This is the simplest method and works for the vast majority of business users.
- Connect your old iPhone to WiFi
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup
- Tap Back Up Now
- Wait for it to finish. Do not disconnect from WiFi until it completes
The backup includes your apps, app data, settings, photos, messages, contacts, calendars, and most of your configuration. Depending on how much data you have, it takes anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or so.
How to check it worked: Go back to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and look at the date and time under "Last successful backup." If it shows today's date and a recent time, you are good.
Computer Backup (Mac or PC)
If you prefer a local backup, or if your iCloud storage is full, you can back up to a computer instead.
- On a Mac (macOS Catalina or later): Connect your iPhone with a cable, open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar, and click Back Up Now
- On a PC: Connect your iPhone, open iTunes, select your device, and click Back Up Now
Important for business users: Tick the box that says "Encrypt local backup" or "Encrypt iPhone backup." An encrypted backup preserves your saved passwords, WiFi credentials, Health data, and call history. Without encryption, these are excluded from the backup, which means you will have to re-enter passwords for everything after the transfer.

Step 2: Setting Up Your iPhone 17
You have three options depending on your situation. The first one is by far the easiest.
Option A: Quick Start (Best Method -- iPhone to iPhone)
Quick Start is genuinely brilliant. If you have your old iPhone and your new iPhone 17 side by side, the whole transfer happens almost automatically.
- Turn on your new iPhone 17. You will see a "Hello" screen
- Place your old iPhone next to your new iPhone 17
- A prompt appears on your old iPhone saying "Set Up New iPhone." Tap Continue
- An animation appears on the new iPhone. Hold your old iPhone over the new one so the animation is centred in the viewfinder
- Follow the prompts. You will be asked for your old phone's passcode on the new device
- Set up Face ID on the new iPhone 17 (you can do this later, but it takes 30 seconds so you might as well)
- Choose Transfer from iPhone when prompted
- Wait. The transfer happens directly between the two phones
The transfer time depends on how much data you have. Most people are looking at 15 to 45 minutes. Both phones need to stay near each other and connected to power (or at least well charged) during this time.
What transfers: literally everything. Your apps, photos, messages, contacts, settings, saved passwords, WiFi networks, app data, wallpaper, home screen layout, Apple Watch pairing. It is a near-perfect copy of your old phone on your new one.
Option B: Moving From Android (Move to iOS App)
If you are switching from an Android phone to the iPhone 17, Apple's Move to iOS app handles the heavy lifting.
- On your Android phone, download the Move to iOS app from the Google Play Store
- Start setting up your new iPhone 17. When you reach the "Apps and Data" screen, tap Move Data from Android
- Open the Move to iOS app on your Android phone and follow the prompts
- A code will appear on your iPhone. Enter it on your Android phone
- Select what you want to transfer: contacts, message history, photos, videos, web bookmarks, mail accounts, calendars
This method transfers your personal data but not your apps (since Android apps do not run on iOS). You will need to download the iOS versions of your business apps manually. The good news is that virtually every business app (Teams, Slack, Salesforce, Xero, HubSpot, and so on) has an iOS version, and once you sign in, your data is there.
Option C: Restore From iCloud Backup (Old Phone Not Available)
If your old phone is lost, broken, or already wiped, you can restore from an iCloud backup during setup.
- Start setting up your new iPhone 17
- When you reach the "Apps and Data" screen, tap Restore from iCloud Backup
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Choose the most recent backup
- Wait for the restore to complete. Apps will re-download from the App Store
This takes longer than Quick Start because apps need to download individually, but you will get everything back that was in the backup.
Step 3: Setting Up Business Essentials
Once the basic transfer is done, there are a few business-specific things worth checking and configuring.
Adding Work Email
If your work email did not transfer automatically (or you are setting up fresh), here is how to add it:
- Microsoft Exchange / Office 365: Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Microsoft Exchange. Enter your work email address and follow the prompts. Your IT team may need to approve the device if your organisation uses conditional access policies
- Google Workspace: Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Google. Sign in with your work Google account
- Other providers: Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Other. Enter your IMAP or POP settings (your IT team or email provider can supply these)
Installing Business Apps
If you used Quick Start, your business apps should already be on the new phone. If you restored from backup, they will re-download automatically. Check that these are installed and working:
- Your CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, etc.)
- Communication tools (Microsoft Teams, Slack, Zoom)
- File storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox)
- Any industry-specific apps your business uses
Sign in to each one and verify your data is there.

Setting Up Face ID
Face ID on the iPhone 17 is fast and reliable. If you skipped it during initial setup:
- Go to Settings > Face ID and Passcode
- Enter your passcode
- Tap Set Up Face ID
- Follow the prompts. You slowly move your head in a circle twice. It takes about 30 seconds
Face ID works for unlocking your phone, authorising app downloads, Apple Pay, and signing in to supported apps. For business use, it is both more secure and more convenient than a PIN.
Enabling Find My iPhone
This is critical for business phones, particularly for GDPR compliance. If a phone containing business data is lost or stolen, Find My iPhone lets you locate it or remotely wipe it.
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Find My > Find My iPhone
- Make sure Find My iPhone is turned on
- Turn on Find My network (this helps locate the phone even when it is offline)
- Turn on Send Last Location (this automatically sends the phone's location to Apple when the battery is critically low)
If your business has an MDM (Mobile Device Management) solution, your IT team may configure this centrally. But it is worth checking it is active regardless.
Setting Up a VPN
If your company uses a VPN for secure access to internal systems:
- Go to Settings > General > VPN and Device Management
- Tap Add VPN Configuration
- Enter the details provided by your IT team (server, account, password, or certificate)
Alternatively, if your company uses a VPN app (Cisco AnyConnect, GlobalProtect, NordVPN Teams, etc.), download it from the App Store and sign in with your work credentials.
Step 4: SIM Transfer
Your new iPhone 17 needs a SIM to make calls and use mobile data. There are three scenarios.
Physical SIM Swap
The simplest option. Remove the SIM card from your old phone and insert it into the iPhone 17. The SIM tray is on the left side of the device. Use the SIM eject tool that comes in the box (or a paperclip) to pop it open, swap the card, and push the tray back in. Your phone number and network connection will work immediately.
eSIM Transfer (iPhone to iPhone)
If your old iPhone used an eSIM, you can transfer it to your new iPhone 17 during setup. When you use Quick Start, it will ask if you want to transfer your mobile plan. Tap Continue and follow the prompts. Your network may send a verification code. The transfer typically completes within a few minutes.
If you are setting up without your old phone, contact your network provider and ask them to transfer your eSIM to the new device. They will either send you a QR code to scan or push the eSIM to your new phone remotely.
Getting a New SIM From Your Business Provider
If you are getting a new SIM as part of a new business contract, your provider will either send you a physical SIM card or an eSIM activation QR code. For a physical SIM, just insert it. For an eSIM, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM and scan the QR code.
If you are porting your number from another network, the transfer typically takes a few hours. You will have a temporary period where neither SIM works, but it is usually brief.

Step 5: iPhone 17 Features Worth Setting Up for Business
The iPhone 17 has several features that are particularly useful for business users. These are worth spending a few minutes configuring.
Action Button
The iPhone 17 has an Action Button on the left side that you can customise to do whatever you find most useful. By default it toggles Silent Mode, but for business users consider setting it to:
- Voice Memo for quickly recording meeting notes or site observations
- Camera for instant access to document scanning or site photography
- Translate if you work with international clients
- Shortcut to trigger a custom automation (for example, one tap to send your ETA to a client)
To configure it: Settings > Action Button. Swipe through the options and pick what suits your workflow.
Apple Intelligence
The iPhone 17 comes with Apple Intelligence, Apple's suite of AI-powered tools. These are genuinely useful for business:
- Writing Tools: Select any text you have written in Mail, Notes, or Messages and tap Writing Tools. You can proofread, rewrite, adjust the tone (make it more professional, more concise, more friendly), or summarise. Handy for drafting client emails on the go
- Notification Summaries: Apple Intelligence summarises groups of notifications so you can scan the important points without reading every message individually. Useful when you come out of a meeting to 30 unread notifications
- Smart Siri: Siri is significantly more capable and understands context better. You can ask it to find specific emails, summarise a conversation, or draft a reply
- Image Playground and Genmoji: Less immediately business-relevant, but handy for creating quick visuals for presentations or team communications
To check Apple Intelligence is enabled: Settings > Apple Intelligence and Siri. Make sure it is turned on.
Always-On Display
The iPhone 17 has an Always-On Display that shows the time, date, and your wallpaper even when the phone is locked. This is useful in a business context because you can glance at the time and check for notifications without picking up the phone or tapping the screen. It uses minimal battery.
If you find it distracting, you can turn it off: Settings > Display and Brightness > Always On Display.
Camera Control Button
The iPhone 17 includes a Camera Control button on the lower right side. A light press opens the camera. You can also use it to adjust zoom, exposure, and other settings with a swipe gesture. For business users who frequently photograph documents, sites, products, or whiteboards, having instant one-handed camera access is genuinely useful.
Step 6: What to Do With Your Old Phone
Once your new iPhone 17 is set up and everything is working, you need to deal with the old device properly.
Wipe It
Before you do anything else with your old phone, erase it completely:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings
- Enter your passcode and Apple ID password when prompted
- The phone will reset to factory settings
This removes all your personal and business data. For GDPR compliance, this step is essential. Never hand over, sell, or recycle a phone that has not been wiped.
Trade It In
Apple offers trade-in credit for old iPhones, and most networks offer trade-in deals when you take out a new contract. The value varies depending on the model and condition, but it can knock a meaningful amount off your new contract cost.
Recycle It
If the phone is too old or damaged to trade in, recycle it responsibly. Apple stores accept any Apple device for free recycling. Many high street phone shops and electronics retailers also have recycling programmes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to switch to iPhone 17?
The actual data transfer takes 15 to 60 minutes depending on how much data you have. The full process, including backup, transfer, checking everything works, and configuring business features, typically takes one to two hours. You can use your old phone right up until the transfer starts, so there is very little downtime.
Will I lose any data when switching to iPhone 17?
Not if you back up first. Quick Start transfers everything between iPhones. iCloud backup restores nearly everything. The only things you may need to set up again are banking apps (which require re-authentication for security), Apple Pay cards, and some work apps that need fresh sign-in credentials.
Can I switch to iPhone 17 from Android?
Yes. Apple's Move to iOS app transfers your contacts, messages, photos, videos, bookmarks, mail accounts, and calendars from Android to iPhone. You will need to re-download the iOS versions of your apps, but all major business apps are available on both platforms.
Do I need to contact my network provider to switch phones?
If you are keeping your current SIM card and just moving it to the new phone, no. If you are transferring an eSIM or getting a new SIM as part of a new contract, you will need to work with your provider. If you get your iPhone 17 through Compare The Networks, we handle the entire process for you.
