Focus Group vs Alternatives: The 2026 UK Business Telecoms Shortlist

If You Have Decided Focus Group Is Not For You — What Is?

Maybe you have read the 1-star reviews on uk.trustpilot.com/review/focusgroup.co.uk. Maybe the ETF came back astronomical. Maybe services appeared on your invoice that you never ordered. Maybe you just want to shop around properly before your Focus Group renewal. Either way, you need a shortlist of realistic alternatives.

We are Compare The Networks, an independent, OFCOM-regulated business telecoms comparison service, helping UK businesses since 2008. We are not affiliated with Focus Group — or, for that matter, with any of the providers below. This article walks through the honest alternatives and who each one suits.

The Three Categories of Alternative

Before we get into specific providers, understand the three categories:

1. Other Consolidator Resellers

Companies like Focus Group that grow by acquisition and offer a one-supplier solution. Onecom, 4com, Daisy Communications, Chess Telecom. Convenient. Same single-supplier risks.

2. Going Direct to the Networks

EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three for mobile. Openreach fibre direct or a major ISP for broadband. Hosted VoIP direct from a platform provider. More admin, better pricing, less lock-in.

3. Independent Specialists

Smaller, focused providers who do one thing well. A specialist hosted VoIP provider for your phone system. A dedicated business ISP for broadband. A mobile broker for SIM-only deals.

Most businesses end up with a mix. Which is where an independent comparison service helps — we compare across all three categories and tell you which combination suits.

Focus Group vs Onecom

Onecom is a Vodafone partner — the largest one in the UK. Similar product range to Focus Group (mobile, VoIP, broadband, IT). Similar acquisition-led growth. Similar themes in their 1-star reviews.

Where They Differ

  • Onecom is a dedicated Vodafone partner for mobile. Focus Group uses multiple networks.
  • Onecom's pricing pattern (per our Onecom review) typically includes a discounted initial rate that steps up later in the contract.
  • Both use long-term (24-36 month) contracts.

Which to Choose

If you have already decided Vodafone is the right network for your postcodes, Onecom is worth a direct comparison. If you are not sure Vodafone is right, compare against the direct networks. Get a free quote to benchmark all four.

Focus Group vs 4com

4com is a different product to Focus Group. They sell business phone systems — specifically the HiHi handsets — bundled with call plans, often on 5-7 year finance agreements.

Where They Differ

  • 4com contracts are typically much longer than Focus Group's (5-7 years vs 2-3 years).
  • 4com customers are often locked into a specific handset (HiHi).
  • Both attract similar "astronomical ETF" complaints in their 1-star reviews.

Which to Choose

Neither, honestly, is our suggestion for most businesses. A hosted VoIP platform with standard phones you can run on any VoIP provider gives you far more flexibility. See our 4com review and hosted VoIP business guide.

Focus Group vs Daisy Communications

Daisy Communications is part of the wider Daisy Group — one of the larger UK business telecoms consolidators. Similar acquisition-led model.

Where They Differ

  • Daisy has deeper enterprise and mid-market presence
  • Focus Group focuses more heavily on SMEs
  • Similar complaint themes in 1-star reviews on both providers

Which to Choose

Both are legitimate options for a one-supplier SME solution. Compare both against going direct to the network and see what the pricing difference is. See our Daisy Communications review.

Focus Group vs Chess Telecom

Chess Telecom (Chess ICT) is another UK business telecoms consolidator. Wide product range, acquisition-led growth, similar contract structures to Focus Group.

Where They Differ

  • Chess has a stronger Manchester/North West heritage
  • Similar complaint patterns in 1-star reviews on both

Which to Choose

Similar analysis. Compare against direct network and specialist VoIP provider options. See our Chess Telecom review.

Focus Group vs Going Direct to Mobile Networks

The fundamental question for mobile: why are you using a reseller at all?

EE

UK coverage leader. Best for travelling staff across motorways and rural areas. Premium tariffs but often worth it if coverage matters.

Vodafone

Strong in cities, good business tools, 5G coverage expanding rapidly.

O2

Includes Roam at Home on business plans — 25GB EU data plus inclusive UK mins/texts at no extra cost. Vodafone and EE do not have equivalent included EU roaming.

Three

Generally the sharpest on price, unlimited data plans, good 5G rollout.

Why Direct Is Often Better Than Focus Group for Mobile

  • Lower pricing (no reseller margin)
  • Transparent billing direct from the network
  • Easier dispute resolution (OFCOM's ADR rules apply directly)
  • No dependency on a reseller for coverage — if EE works, it works.

What You Lose

The single-supplier account manager who knows your full telecoms setup. For businesses with 10+ lines, that relationship can be worth paying for. For smaller businesses, the cost often outweighs the benefit.

Focus Group vs Independent Hosted VoIP

For VoIP, the competitive landscape is completely different to mobile.

Independent Hosted VoIP Providers

Specialist providers running hosted phone platforms (Horizon, 3CX, Yealink or their own). Typically:

  • Transparent per-user pricing
  • Standard hardware (not locked handsets)
  • 12 or 24-month contracts rather than 36
  • Strong support because it is their core business

Focus Group VoIP

Bundled with the rest of your telecoms. Convenient, but:

  • Per-user cost often higher
  • Harder to benchmark against the standalone market
  • Subject to the same contract and support issues as the mobile and broadband side

Which to Choose

For VoIP specifically, we almost always recommend a specialist provider over a consolidator. See our hosted VoIP business guide, business VoIP page or get a VoIP quote.

Focus Group vs a Virtual Landline

If your "VoIP" needs are really just "a business number that forwards to mobile", you do not need a Focus Group VoIP contract at all. A virtual landline is a fraction of the price.

  • Virtual landline: a UK business number (0207, 0161, 01xx, 08xx etc.) that forwards to your mobile. Typically £5-£15/month.
  • Hosted VoIP: a full phone system with call routing, voicemail, hunt groups, IVR, softphones. Typically £8-£25/user/month.

These are different products. Many businesses end up on a VoIP contract when a virtual landline would do. See virtual landline UK.

Decision Framework

Choose Focus Group If

  • You genuinely want a single supplier for mobile, VoIP, broadband and IT
  • You have an active account manager relationship you value
  • You have read their 1-star Trustpilot reviews and accept the risk patterns

Choose Another Consolidator (Onecom, Daisy, Chess) If

  • You want the same single-supplier model but with a different flavour
  • You have a specific network preference (e.g. Vodafone via Onecom)

Choose Direct Networks + Specialist VoIP If

  • You want the best price and transparency
  • You are willing to manage 2 or 3 providers instead of 1
  • You want to avoid single-supplier risk

Choose an Independent Comparison Service If

  • You just want the best answer without doing all the research yourself
  • You want all options on the table
  • You want to be paid for by the networks, not by you

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to Focus Group for mobile?

Depends on your postcodes. EE is strongest nationally but O2, Vodafone or Three can beat them in specific locations. Getting quotes from all four, via a comparison service, is the most reliable approach.

Should I pick another consolidator or go direct?

For businesses with 5 or fewer mobile lines, direct networks almost always win on price and simplicity. For larger businesses that value a single account manager, a consolidator can still make sense — but compare against direct and specialist options.

Is VoIP cheaper with a specialist provider than with Focus Group?

Usually yes. Specialist hosted VoIP providers typically offer better per-user pricing, shorter contracts and better platform-level support.

What about broadband? Should I leave that with Focus Group too?

For basic fibre, going to a direct ISP (Vodafone Business, BT Business, Zen, Aquiss etc.) is almost always cheaper. For leased lines and complex connectivity, a consolidator can sometimes help coordinate, but still benchmark the price.
