Business Mobile for UK Haulage & HGV Drivers (2026): EU Roaming Sorted

Last updated: April 2026

Haulage has a specific mobile bill problem: drivers cross borders, spend days or weeks away, and someone at head office has to reconcile the roaming charges at month-end. Get the tariff wrong and you're adding £50-£100 per driver per month in uplift. Across a 20-truck fleet that's £1,200 a month you didn't mean to spend.

CTN business tariffs include inclusive roaming in 83 countries — the full EU/EEA plus Switzerland, Norway, Turkey, and much of the Balkans — so the whole typical UK-EU route is covered on a driver's normal UK allowance. Same SIM, same allowance, no roaming uplift.

The routes this covers

Typical UK haulage routes and whether they work on inclusive roaming:

RouteCovered inclusive?
UK → France → Belgium → Netherlands (Rotterdam)Yes — all four
UK → France → Germany → Austria → ItalyYes — all five
UK → Germany → Poland → Czech RepublicYes — all four
UK → Spain → PortugalYes — both
UK → France → SpainYes — both
UK → Germany → Austria → Hungary → RomaniaYes — all five
UK → Germany → Switzerland → ItalyYes — all three
UK → Ireland (via ferry)Yes
Routes entering Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, SerbiaNo — roaming uplift
Routes via TurkeyTurkey yes, Serbia/Bulgaria yes
Routes entering Balkans via GreeceGreece yes, Albania yes, Bosnia yes, others check

Whole-route inclusive coverage is CTN's strongest haulage pitch.

What drivers actually use

Most driver mobile usage on long routes:

  • Data — WhatsApp messages with dispatch, Google Maps, tachograph apps, load photos, document uploads
  • Calls — dispatch, customer, breakdown cover, ferry booking confirmations
  • Texts — SMS-based 2FA for load boards (Teleroute, Transporeon)
  • Some video calls with family — which matters for driver retention

A 50GB tariff typically covers a driver for a month of solid use without throttling, including video calls home. 25GB tariff is tight for long-hall drivers.

What's NOT included

Being straight:

  • Non-inclusive destinations — Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Serbia, most non-EU former Yugoslav states (some listed), most of Middle East, Central Asia. Roaming-uplift territory.
  • Truck tracking SIMs — these are separate M2M SIMs, not included in the 83-destination list. Different product.
  • Calls to non-inclusive countries FROM the UK — our 39-country call list covers EEA + USA + Canada. Calls from the UK to Turkey (or anywhere outside those 39) aren't in the inclusive bundle.

Also — our tariffs are 36-month terms. For fleet deployment with driver turnover, we can do SIM swaps without resetting the term.

Actual pricing depends on network, handset inclusion and volume. EE generally best for UK rural coverage; O2 for EU Roam at Home layering; Vodafone for urban strength.

The "driver keeps running out of data" problem

If you're hearing from drivers that they're running out of data mid-month, it's usually one of three things:

  1. They're tethering their personal laptop / tablet through the phone — reasonable (loads of drivers do it for evening entertainment) but eats data
  2. Background sync of work apps — vehicle tracking, tachograph upload, route apps
  3. Roaming data uplift applied unexpectedly because they crossed into a non-inclusive destination (common at EU external borders)

For drivers doing long EU runs, the 100GB unlimited-international tier is usually the right fit, not the 25GB or 50GB. Cheaper in the long run.

Calls from the UK, not while roaming

Important distinction: inclusive roaming means your UK allowance works in other countries. Calls FROM the UK to foreign numbers are a different benefit.

  • Dispatch at head office in the UK phoning a driver who's in France → this is a UK-to-France call, covered by your international minutes bundle (France is on the 39-country call list)
  • Dispatch at head office in the UK phoning a customer in Turkey → Turkey is NOT on the call list, so this is out-of-bundle

Most haulage comms happen driver-to-dispatch, so the combination of inclusive roaming (while abroad) + EEA inclusive calls (while in UK) covers >95% of real-world traffic.

Operational tips

  • Give drivers the Teams app or Signal for ops comms — works over data on inclusive roaming, free regardless of country
  • Use cloud document upload for CMRs and delivery proof — OneDrive or Dropbox mobile app, uploads over data within your allowance
  • Enable dual-SIM if drivers carry a personal phone too — most handsets support it; keeps personal separate from work
  • Use EU roaming-friendly voicemail so customer callbacks from the UK don't cost drivers for voicemail retrieval while abroad
  • Set a corporate data roaming cap inside your mobile management to stop any single driver racking up out-of-bundle charges on non-inclusive destinations

FAQs

Does the inclusive roaming really cover the whole EU?

Yes — all EEA countries (EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) are on the 83-destination list, plus Switzerland, Turkey, and much of the Balkans. The main EU routes for UK haulage are all covered.

What happens if my driver crosses into Serbia?

Serbia is not on the 83-destination list. Once your driver's phone connects to a Serbian network, roaming uplift rates apply. This is worth briefing drivers on — a phone can roam onto a network across the border even when the driver's still physically on the Hungarian side, depending on signal propagation.

Can you do SIM swaps for driver turnover?

Yes. Fleet tariffs can have SIMs swapped to new drivers without resetting the 36-month term. The number moves with the SIM (or stays with the fleet, your choice).

What about truck tracking SIMs?

Telematics / tracking M2M SIMs are a separate product — usually supplied with the tracking platform. CTN can supply dedicated M2M tariffs for telematics if needed; ask us about it.

Do you supply phones or just SIMs?

Both. We can supply rugged handsets (CAT, Samsung XCover) suited to cab life, or SIM-only if drivers are using their own or company-standard phones.

Is there a way to stop a driver going over the data allowance?

Yes — most business mobile platforms can cap data at the allowance limit (no auto-top-up). Some customers prefer a hard cap; others prefer alerts. We'll configure per your policy.
